TE Connectivity
– rugged fiber, copper and hybrid connectivity
TE Connectivity is a global manufacturer of connectivity and sensor solutions for industries including industrial, transportation, energy, data centers, aerospace and defense.
Foss uses selected components and connector systems from TE Connectivity in our own production of rugged fiber, copper and hybrid solutions. With trained personnel and in-house manufacturing expertise, we can terminate, assemble and test complete solutions tailored to the customer's requirements.
About TE Connectivity
TE Connectivity is a global industrial technology company with more than 90,000 employees, including approximately 10,000 engineers, serving customers in around 130 countries.
The company has more than 80 years of experience developing connectivity and sensing technologies and provides solutions for the transmission of power, signals and data.
TE has an extensive product portfolio. At Foss, our focus is primarily on rugged connector systems for fiber, copper and hybrid connectivity.
TE Connectivity at Foss
Foss uses components from TE Connectivity as the foundation for several of our rugged cable and connector solutions.
We can assist with:
- connector selection
- cable selection
- fiber and copper configuration
- termination and assembly
- custom cable assemblies and wire harnesses
- hybrid solutions combining fiber, copper and power
- testing and documentation
Foss production personnel have also completed specialised training with TE Connectivity covering areas such as wire harness construction, shielding, crimping, splicing and termination of D38999-based solutions.
ProBeam – expanded beam for harsh environments
ProBeam is TE Connectivity's range of rugged expanded beam fiber optic connectors designed for demanding and mobile applications.
Instead of the fiber end faces making physical contact, lenses expand and refocus the optical beam across the connector interface. This makes the connection less sensitive to dust and contamination and well suited for environments where connectors are repeatedly mated and unmated.
Foss uses ProBeam in pre-terminated tactical cables and custom systems for applications including:
- defense
- offshore and marine
- industrial applications
- broadcast
- mobile and temporary communications
ProBeam Junior is available in MIL-qualified versions according to MIL-DTL-83526/20 and /21.
D38999 and EB16 expanded beam termini
MIL-DTL-38999 is a widely used connector platform for applications requiring high mechanical robustness, resistance to vibration and protection against demanding environmental conditions.
TE Connectivity has developed ProBeam EB16 expanded beam termini, designed to fit standard size 16 cavities in connector systems including MIL-DTL-38999 Series I and Series III.
EB16 is available for both single-mode and multimode fiber and combines the mechanical robustness of the D38999 platform with a contactless expanded beam optical interface.
Foss can integrate EB16 termini into custom D38999-based solutions for defense, aerospace, industrial systems and other demanding applications.
Fiber, copper and power in one solution
One of the advantages of the D38999 platform is the ability to combine different types of connections within a single connector.
Foss can manufacture hybrid solutions combining, for example:
- fiber
- electrical signals
- data
- power
within the same connector system.
One example is a D38999 configuration combining EB16 expanded beam termini with electrical contacts. This can reduce the number of separate cables and connection points required between two systems.
Such solutions can be particularly useful for mobile systems, sensors, defense applications and other equipment where space, robustness and ease of connection are important.
Custom cable assemblies and wire harnesses
Our expertise extends beyond fiber optic connectors.
Through training with TE Connectivity, Foss has further developed its capabilities in the production of custom copper wire harnesses and cable assemblies.
Production processes can include:
- cutting and preparation of cables and conductors
- twisting
- shielding
- crimping
- splicing
- termination
- assembly
- testing
This enables us to combine different components and technologies in one complete cable assembly.
Expertise through cooperation and training
Rugged connector and cable systems require the right equipment, production processes and expertise.
Foss production personnel have completed training with TE Connectivity in Swindon, UK. The training covered the complete process from drawing to finished wire harness, including twisting, shielding, crimping, splicing, looping and termination of D38999 connectors.
This expertise is applied in our own production when developing and manufacturing custom solutions.
Why choose TE Connectivity through Foss?
A rugged connector system involves more than the electrical or optical interface alone. The cable, connectors, environmental requirements, mechanical loads and intended use all need to be considered as part of the complete solution.
Foss combines components and technology from TE Connectivity with our own expertise in fiber optics, copper connectivity and manufacturing.
We can assist with:
- connector system selection
- fiber and cable selection
- D38999 configurations
- ProBeam and expanded beam technology
- EB16 termini
- copper wire harnesses
- hybrid fiber and copper solutions
- custom termination and assembly
- testing before delivery
The result is a complete solution tailored to the application and ready for installation.
